Historical Origin and Current System
Saudi Arabia gained sovereignty in 1932, when the whole territory of Saudi Arabia was united under King Adb-al-Aziz Al Saud, creating the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After the royal family had been exiled to Kuwait and then brought back into Saudi Arabia, the land went through a time of turmoil and was subsequently reunited. The United States, on the other hand, after having many troubles, broke off and declared independence from Great Britain, nothing similar to what happened to Saudi Arabia.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's official constitution is the Qur'an, but the effective constitution is the Basic Law of Government, created in 1992. The document includes directions of how the country is to be governed and set rights and responsibilities for citizens of Saudi Arabia. The king also created an executive, legislative, and judicial branch, much like how the United States has three branches. Unlike The U.S., Saudi Arabia has the king acting as a Prime minister over a Council of Ministers. The Council of Ministers is similar to the president's cabinet, being separated into agencies to handle topics ranging from foreign matters to education.
