Role of the People
In Saudi Arabia, the role of the people is very limited compared to the United States. Being an absolute monarchy, Saudi citizens do not vote, with the exception being they may vote in municipal elections. In 2015, women were allowed to start voting alongside men for municipal elections. Along with this, political parties are banned in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabian media is also very limited, and is able to be censored, as political dissent and topics offensive to Islamic morality are prohibited. As such, there is no adversarial press in Saudi Arabia, while the media’s role as an adversary is very important. Instead, the role of the people is to be figures of morality and abide by the rules of Islam and the king.
In the United States, the people play a very important role. Americans vote in elections, join political parties and interest groups, and often serve as critics of the government. The media also is open and very uncensored to help show a clear filter to Americans of what the government is doing.
